Modeling and Simulation Professional Science MS

The Modeling and Simulation Professional Science MS degree program is a two-year course of study offered entirely online by UCF in partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Worldwide Campus.

Who is it for?
The Modeling and Simulation Professional Science MS degree is a business/technical degree for working professionals and others who want to expand their knowledge and skills in modeling and simulation business and enhance their career opportunities.

The course provides a strong combination of business and technical courses and includes a graduate internship.

Coursework also qualifies for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's 18 credit hour certificate program in Modeling and Simulation Management. Enrollees qualifying for the Aerospace Workforce Transition (AWT) Program may be eligible for a grant of up to $4,500 to pursue the M&S Management Certificate. See links at left for contact information.

Curriculum
The curriculum consists of 12 courses (36 credit hours). UCF will offer eight technical courses online—five by UCF's Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems and three by faculty at the Institute for Simulation and Training. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will offer the remaining four business classes. The Embry-Riddle classes are also available online and at more than 130 of Embry-Riddle's Worldwide Campus classroom locations.

Enrollment
Students will enroll both in the graduate school at UCF and at Embry-Riddle. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required for enrollment, but those who enter the program are expected to have an appropriate technical background in engineering, computer science or other simulation-related disciplines, through academic preparation and/or work experience.

They must also have fulfilled the prerequisite graduate-level engineering statistics course or an equivalent based on previous academic experience to be eligible.

Application Requirements
See the Admissions section of the Graduate Catalog for information on general UCF graduate admissions requirements that apply to all prospective students.

APPLY ONLINE to UCF graduate admissions before the first class begins on October 12.

Course Descriptions
Courses are taught by an interdisciplinary faculty from the UCF Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, the UCF Institute for Simulation and Training, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide Campus.

Fall 2009
(All are 3 credit hours. Bold titles indicate required courses.)

IDS 6937W. Modeling and Simulation Systems (UCF–McGill)
offers a top-down approach that introduces the topic of managing and developing simulation systems and provides an introduction to the fundamentals of modeling and simulation management and engineering practice. During this course students will develop the skill to recognize simulation problems (i.e., opportunities) and understand the types of technical and professional skills needed to address them.

IDS 6717. Perspectives on Modeling and Simulation (UCF–Kincaid)
provides an overview of the field and specific examples of several current applications of M&S, including military simulation for training, simulation for entertainment and virtual reality.

Spring 2010

EIN 5140. Project Engineering (UCF Kotnour)
Role of engineer in project management with emphasis on project life cycle, quantitative and qualitative methods of cost, schedule, and performance control.

ESI 5531. Discreet Systems Simulation(UCF–Geiger)
Methods for performing discrete systems simulation, including network modeling.

Summer 2010

MGMT 524. Management Science (ERAU)
Application of management science processes and models used in decision-making in management. Techniques include decision theory, queuing theory, forecasting models, inventory theory, linear and integer programming, transportation and assignment models, and network models including project management calculations (time and cost) using PERT and CPM. Computer techniques are used to solve problems and to communicate the results in a clear and understandable fashion. Emphasis is on using quantitatively based analytical methodologies, interpreting quantitative results, and communicating conclusions.

MGMT 532. Philosophy, Principles, and Practices in Management of Quality (ERAU)
The content of this course incorporates multiple aspects of the management of quality and the integration of quality considerations into all other management decision processes. The primary thrust of the course is an in-depth analysis of quality management concepts, methods, and techniques from a systems perspective. Areas of emphasis are leadership, strategy development and deployment, quality management tools, customer focus, supplier performance, management communications, projects, and training and development.

Other ERAU courses available

Fall 2010

EIN 6528. Simulation Based Life Cycle Engineering (UCF–Proctor)
This course examines the phenomenon of simulation based life cycle engineering. Case studies illustrate infrastructure and organization change necessary to gain operational and strategic advantage.

ESI 6551C. Systems Engineering (Sala-Diakanda)
and application of systems science, operations research, systems methodologies, and systems management for the design, production, and maintenance of efficient, reliable systems.

Spring 2011

EIN 5356. Cost Engineering (UCF–Thompson)
Cost estimation and control of engineering systems throughout the product life cycle.

IDS 6946. Graduate Internship (UCF–Kincaid)

Summer 2011

MGMT 533. Legal, Ethical, and Regulatory Bases of Management Practices (ERAU)
The emphasis in this course is on managerial decision-making and sound management practice based on knowledge of legal, ethical, and regulatory fundamentals. Liability, contract, and labor law constraints as well as cultural and ethical foundations of management practice are included in the topics addressed. Regulatory controls and constraints on managerial decision making in areas such as occupational and environmental safety and discrimination in the workplace are included, as are other safety and security issues of which the manager should have knowledge.

MGMT 672. Planning and Execution of Strategy (ERAU)
Students address the integration of all management aspects of business with the cultural, ethical, and regulatory environments to form comprehensive, workable strategies for success. Multinational and international factors and differences related to enterprise success are emphasized.
