With a joint faulty appointment between IST and the Department of Mathematics, Dr Kaup is major force in Modeling and Simulation programs, Dr. Kaup has authored or co-authored over 150 refereed publications with over 50 other publications in various proceedings. He is internationally known for his work in the areas of non-linear waves, applied mathematics, plasma physics, non-linear optics and soliton theory, and has more than 5,200 citations of his works in various refereed journal articles. He has also been the principal investigator or co-investigator for more than four million dollars in external funding through various research grants.

He created a large share of the soliton mathematical technology that was generated in the 1970’s and 80’s and had modeled many physical situations that could be described with this technology. He is currently the principle investigator for an NSF grant with the purpose to expand the Social Forces Model to provide more realistic simulations of crowd behavior under panic and non-panic conditions by including cultural, age, and gender features. The findings of this research will provide a better understanding of the influence and importance of social variability in various situations. The expanded model will be a valuable tool for social planning, law enforcement agencies and others in the handling of large events as well as improving the design of public spaces.
