NTSA 2019 M&S Awards

Dr. Randall Shumaker and his 2019 Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Modeling & Simulation.

Once again, SMST wrapped up another successful week at the annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC). It was an experience filled with spectacular exhibitions, special events, professional development workshops, tutorials on key topics, and motivating keynote speakers. This convention, held in Orlando, is the largest of its kind, gathering almost 17,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors from around the world.

SMST had the pleasure of hosting a booth on the exhibit floor, along with the National Center for Simulation (NCS) and various other sponsors. Some of the special events that SMST was proud to be a part of were the Cyber Academy Challenge organized by Dr. Bruce Caulkins, a signature event moderated by Dr. David “Fuzzy” Wells, and a technological demonstration by David Metcalf, Tim Welch, and Michael Eakins from the Mixed Emerging Technology Integration Lab (METIL) during a focus event.

However, one of the biggest highlights of the week happened on Wednesday, December 4th during The National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA) Modeling & Simulation Awards Dinner. It was at this time that NTSA presented the 2019 Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Modeling & Simulation to SMST Director, Dr. Randall Shumaker.

Dr. Randall Shumaker was recognized for his lifetime contributions to modeling and simulation education and research; pioneering simulation for testing, exploratory development, AI, and human-robot teaming; and leading the growth and diversification of modeling and simulation at the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Institute for Simulation and Training. His visionary leadership resulted in establishing the Institute’s preeminence in transdisciplinary human-centered modeling and simulation and the creation of the UCF School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training.

A large part of SMST’s success as a research arm and academic unit can be attributed to Dr. Shumaker and it is an honor to have such a dedicated member recognized for their lifetime of accomplishments.
